Qatar Shell Research and Technology Center (QSRTC), QSTP, LLC—100% owned subsidiary of Shell—is anchor tenant of the freezone established by Qatar Foundation in Qatar Science & Technology Park (QSTP), a home for technology based companies from around the world.

The vision of the center is: “To fuel innovation into Qatar’s energy e​​cosystem.” ​​And the mission is: “To drive the State of Qatar and Shell forward in Gas monetization through technical innovation and research excellence.” The center represents Shell’s global research and development (R&D) in Qatar, delivering projects related to Gas-to-X. Gas in GTX can be CO2, CH4 or C2​H6​; X can be LNG, GTL, chemicals or other products. The center takes a portfolio approach to Gas-to-X with equal efforts spent on: Existing Assets (Pearl GTL and LNG) and Future Assets (for example, H2).

Focus Area

  • GTL Catalyst R&D delivering improvements and quality assurance for the catalysts used in Pearl GTL. The research is conducted locally in the center with 8 microflow GTL reactors.
  • GTL Products and Technology R&D developing / maturing niche applications that create further valorization of premium grade GTL products from the Pearl GTL, and improving the sustainability by focusing on byproducts—water, biosludge, steam/power, gases, etc.—and technologies that improve efficiency of the plant.
  • Asset Integrity R&D ensuring focused effort is made towards mitigating challenges pertaining to asset degradation and urgently delivering fit for purpose solutions.
  • Gas Conversion R&D focusing on the next generation of Gas to X technologies (Gas to value added products, e.g., Hydrogen).
  • Technical Services R&D delivering Qatar Shell capabilities to local companies in Qatar as services, e.g., Amine monitoring and Corrosion inhibition testing.

Our programme of dynamic collaborations with both the local and international academic community at QSRTC enables Shell to remain steadfast in its support of the Qatar National Vision 2030 and the Qatar National Research Strategy (QNRS) supporting Qatar’s role as the world’s largest Liquefied Natural Gas exporter and the Gas to Liquids (GTL) capital of the world.
